Developmental Papers
  • The USASBE developmental track is designed for authors who seek professional feedback and guidance from authors to prepare their papers for publication. Our objective is to increase your scholarly productivity and to help you move up the research curve more quickly.  You will receive suggestions regarding appropriate publication outlets for your work and direction for future research activities.
  • To participate in the developmental track, authors should submit proposals that do not exceed a total of seven typewritten pages and 4,000 words—5 pages for the body (including any charts, graphs, diagrams, etc.) and up to two pages of references.  The word count is for the entire proposal—including the text, charts, graphs, diagrams, references, etc.  The proposal should be single-spaced, using a 10-point or larger font, in the MS-Word or Rich Text Format.  To submit, authors should use the online submission system at www.usasbe.org.  In addition to the proposal itself, authors will need to provide their contact information and that of any coauthors, plus a 100-word abstract.
  • Proposals will be judged and selected for inclusion in the developmental track based on the novelty of research questions, potential contributions to the literature, and likelihood of completion.  Thus, authors should clearly spell out their research questions, and the potential contributions that they envision. They should also provide findings and conclusions (if available) to show that their proposal is much more than just an idea for a paper that might be written or a study that might be conducted in the future.
  • To preserve anonymity, author names should NOT be identified in the header/footer or in the body of the proposal.  Authors should be mentioned in the text or notes in the third person only.  All proposals will be reviewed by at least two (2) reviewers.  Reviewer comments will not be supplied to authors.
  • A minimum of one author must agree to participate in the roundtable discussion for a proposal to be accepted.  In addition, authors will be asked to provide a 100 word abstract to be included in the Proceedings.
  • Proposals accepted for the developmental track will be grouped for roundtable discussions with others as close as possible to the same research stream.  An experienced researcher will be assigned to provide feedback on each proposal in the group at the conference session, and to facilitate the roundtable discussions of those proposals.  Thus, though authors will not receive much feedback when their proposals are first reviewed, they will receive extensive feedback during the roundtable discussion.  Moreover, authors will be asked to read the other proposals in their roundtable group so that they too can contribute to those discussions.
  • As with competitive papers, cases, and workshops, developmental track proposals should be submitted through the online submission system no later than September 26, 2011.  Authors will be notified as to whether their proposals are accepted on October 28, 2011.  Authors of accepted proposals will be given the names and contact information of the other participants in their roundtable session, and they will be asked to send those individuals the version of their work that they would like discussed at the conference by December 1, 2011.  Normally, the feedback on a full paper will be much better for developmental purposes than feedback on the proposal that was submitted.

Conference Workshops
  • Workshops are defined as interactive session where participants engage in experiential exercises, are provided the pedagogical framework for those exercises and leave with specific tools and resources they can implement at their institution.  Presenters must designate a division/track for submission in the online submission systems.
  • Each workshop is 75 minutes, inclusive of discussion time.
  • Submissions must be typed, double-spaced with one-inch margins using 12-point Times Roman font in a Word file.
  • Submissions must include an abstract (no more than 100 words) and an executive summary (no more than 300 words). The executive summary should include the nature of the interactive exercises and the take-away value that can be implemented at the attendee’s home institution. Workshops submissions can be no more than 10 pages. Submissions must provide details on the purpose, procedures, and contributions of each participant, as well as the timeline for the workshop agenda.
  • All submissions must include a “So what?” section prior to the “Conclusion section. This section should address the workshop or symposium’s contribution to the field.
  • Authors submitting workshop proposals agree that all authors will attend the conference.
  • Selection for inclusion in the conference program will be based upon quality, originality and relevance in the judgment of at least two independent reviewers. Reviewers will be directed to look for the “So what?” issue.
  • Presenters having workshops accepted for presentation must agree to follow a specific format in preparing a Word file of a one-page academic abstract along with the executive summary and full paper by November 28, 2011. Detailed instructions will be provided with the acceptance notice.
