USASBE Seeks Permanent Central Office Site
2/24/2010
Dear USASBE Member,
In 2009 the USASBE Central Office host school determined that its extreme budget reductions would not permit it to continue support and house USASBE. At that time the Board of Directors selected Belmont University from several candidates as the interim Central Office site. At the same time the Board set an objective of securing a permanent site in 2010.
Recently a RFP was sent to the deans and center directors at the institutions of all US USASBE members. You will find the RFP on our USASBE website at url: http://usasbe.org/about/CentralOfficeWebsiteAnnouncement2010.pdf.
Here is a condensed version of our timeline:
April 15 Proposals due
June 1 Finalist institutions notified
August 6 Board of Directors completes selection
February 2011 Transition to new Central Office completed following Hilton Head Conference
If you believe that your institution will make a good Central Office location we encourage you to work with your center directors and deans to respond to the RFP. Questions can be directed to the Central Office Site Selection Committee Chair, Jeff Alves (570.408.4592, jeffrey.alves@wilkes.edu).

Big Changes at USASBE
05/2/2009
Dear Colleagues and Friends in USASBE,
I hope this finds you well. These are difficult days, especially for universities and colleges in America. At USASBE, we have dedicated ourselves not to doing less, but in fact to finding ways to create more value for our members. In the months ahead, you will see our updated and improved Syllabus Exchange, an enhanced USASBE Career Center, an updated Innovations in Entrepreneurship Education, the launch of a exciting new look and feel for the USASBE website, the availability of a new video library and helpful websites for entrepreneurship educators, and more. We also have planned a number of exciting new features surrounding the 2010 USASBE Annual Conference, including a new Developmental Papers track, enhancement of the highly successful Pillars Sessions from this past conference, continuous enhancement of the USASBE Doctoral Consortium, another Celebration of Excellence party, and some pretty special keynoters. More exciting news about the conference will be coming, but I hope you are working on papers, workshops and cases for submission this year. The annual best practice awards in entrepreneurship education will also be bigger and better than ever.
At the same time, these difficult times have taken their toll in other ways. Economic exigencies at Florida Atlantic University have led us to make some changes with regard to moving the USASBE Central Office. Sadly, the developments will also result in some personnel changes. After three years of yeoman service in transitioning USASBE from its many years at the University of Wisconsin to our home in Florida, and helping to steward many very critical but often less visible changes in our organization, Roger Alderman will be stepping down as Executive Director on June 30. Roger has been a difference-maker, bringing a steady hand, and infusing professionalism in all that he has done. And he has been a good friend and colleague to so many of us. We will miss him and I hope you will convey your good wishes to Roger. And at Roger's right-hand has been the wonderful Daphne Isaacs. She has been a breath of fresh air with her friendly and helpful ways, and her conscientious attention to detail. Unfortunately, Daphne is geographically constrained, and so must remain in South Florida. She will also be with us through June 30.
So we are in the midst of a transition. And in every challenge lies opportunity. I am pleased to announce that the new USASBE home will be at Belmont University in Nashville (also the venue for the 2010 Annual USASBE Conference). We looked at a number of possible interim sites, and believe this to be an outstanding option. Our Interim Executive Director will be Ms. Becky Gann, who has been involved with USASBE for a number of years and knows us well. Becky is well-qualified, with high energy, and a lot of new ideas. We have finalized agreements with Belmont and Becky, and this interim stage will take us through early 2011. By then we will have selected a permanent site.
Roger and Daphne will continue to hold down the fort at FAU, and are managing the transition of all our operations, records, financial activities, and so forth, and they will continue to handle inquiries and serve our members from Boca Raton through June 30. So please feel to contact them there should you have questions or needs. However, as of June 1, our official mailing address and contact details will become:

Nashville, TN 37212-3757
Phone: 615.460.2615
Fax: 615.460.2614

So we will have a month of overlap as we complete the transition. As of June 1, Becky's email will be becky.gann@belmont.edu. I know she is looking forward to working with each of you, and to helping to further advance USASBE as the premier academic organization serving the discipline of entrepreneurship.

USASBE Announces Conference Scholarships for New and Emerging Entrepreneurship Faculty and For Entrepreneurship Center Staff
10/22/2008
It is recognized that entrepreneurship is a rapidly growing curriculum within the nation’s colleges and universities, creating the demand for new faculty. As with any emerging or expanding academic field, the new faculty must be exposed to the methodology and advancements of the discipline if curriculum is to be delivered at an effective and acceptable level. To underscore USASBE’s commitment to the continued expansion of the teaching of entrepreneurship, the FACULTY AND CENTER STAFF DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM has been created to offer scholarships for the USASBE 2009 Conference.
Under the Scholarship Program, $150 scholarships toward total Conference registration fee of $525 are available to new and emerging entrepreneurship faculty and Entrepreneurship Center staff.
Scholarship applicants must: (1) have spent two years or less when considering both any time spent teaching entrepreneurship and spent in a staff member position at an Entrepreneurship Center or (2) be a recent doctoral graduate entering the discipline for the first time. A scholarship applicant’s school must: (1) have an established entrepreneurship curriculum of study or an established Entrepreneurship Center, or (2) be in the process of creating such a curriculum or Center with implementation plans beginning within twelve months of January 8, 2009.
USASBE’s annual conference is the nation’s largest single academic meeting of its kind that focuses specifically on entrepreneurship and offers its attendees exposure to the full range of the discipline. During the conference, the participating faculty and Center staff will learn about best practices in pedagogy, courses and programs, including new tools and advancements. They will also have the opportunity at the conference to network face-to-face with experienced entrepreneurial educators and researchers as well as with other new entrepreneurship faculty and Center staff to exchange information and ideas.
To learn more about the benefits of the Faculty and Center Staff Development Scholarship Program, the criteria for scholarship awards and the application process go to http://www.usasbe.org/fcsd_scholarship/

Babson announces the unexpected death of Jeffry Timmons, recipient of the USASBE Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year Award in 2004
04/11/2008
BABSON ANNOUNCEMENT
PATRICIA GREENE, BABSON PROVOST
Babson College is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected death of our dear friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor, Professor Jeffry Timmons, on April 8 at the age of 66. On Monday, April 7, Professor Timmons spent the entire day at Babson with a small team discussing the history and future of entrepreneurship. He was brilliant in the way that he shared his insights, knowledge, and enthusiasm. His passion, as always, was striking.
Professor Timmons was known internationally for his research, innovative curriculum development, and teaching in entrepreneurship, new ventures, entrepreneurial finance, and venture capital. Inc. named him the “Johnny Appleseed of Entrepreneurship Education.” His doctoral dissertation, “Entrepreneurial and Leadership Development in an Inner City Ghetto and a Rural Depressed Area (Harvard, 1971)” was the first use of the word “entrepreneurial” in a dissertation title. He believed, in his own words, that “the entrepreneurial process is not just about new companies, capital, and jobs. It’s also about fostering an ingenious human spirit and improving humankind.” He was feverishly committed to advancing entrepreneurship.
Professor Timmons’ impact and influence on Babson and the global entrepreneurial community is unparalleled and his passing is a huge loss. We are truly sorry to have to share this news with you.

Information Technology (IT) Geared Towards Small Businesses takes on a Global Importance
7/10/2007
For Immediate Release: International Council for Small Business (ICSB) International Office The George Washington University By: Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy, ICSB Executive Director Contact Tel: 202-994-0704 Email: aymanelt@icsb.org Summary Article: The State of IT World-Wide: Listening to Entrepreneurs and Experts Web Address for Article and Findings: http://www.icsb.org/IT/tabid/168/Default.aspx or http://www.icsb.org The International Office of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) today announced the results of a Global Technology Study conducted in collaboration with DELL Inc. The study included a 12 country survey of small business owners and decision makers and a targeted survey of international small business researchers, practitioners, and consultants conducted by ICSB. The study confirms that IT is extremely important in the growth of small businesses world-wide. "The survey results reinforce the fact that small business owners and the experts both acknowledge the importance of IT on a global level," said Rob van der Horst, President of the ICSB. "Small businesses are using IT for multiple reasons, to better serve their customers and also to better compete in the marketplace." Small Businesses World-Wide Have Been Heard According to the DELL 12 country survey, covering Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, China, Germany, India, Japan Mexico, New Zealand, the UK, and the US, sixty-six percent (66%) of small business owners indicate that IT is extremely important to their business. At the same time, fifty-seven percent (57%) of small business experts, researchers and educators surveyed by ICSB state that IT plays an extremely important role in the growth of small businesses. The ICSB portion of the study also shows that eighty-eight percent (88%) of small business experts think that most small business owners could financially benefit from a greater awareness of IT options. The No. 1 reason small businesses use technology is to better serve customers, followed by growth of their business and, finally, to enable them to better compete in the marketplace. Additionally, small business owners around the world indicate that when it comes to IT:- They prefer simple service solutions because they do not have full-time dedicated IT staff and are, therefore, installing their most sophisticated IT products on their own;
- They do not have time to explore new IT products/possibilities;
- Their top IT Pain Points include: managing costs of technology, product complexity making them too dependent on an outside company for support, and issues with trial-ware installed on new computers;

SCORE and USASBE Form National Alliance to Increase Availability of
Small Business Education and Counseling
Washington, D.C.The SCORE Association Counselors to Americas Small Business and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) announce a national alliance that will greatly enhance the accessibility of small business education and counseling for American scholars and business owners.
SCORE, a leader in business mentoring and USASBE, a pacesetter for entrepreneurship education and development, combine their expertise to help entrepreneurs and students nationwide. Through the alliance, the two organizations will offer an exchange in capabilities to take advantage of their respective resources, providing a voice of experience for college classrooms and the latest in business education and research for business counselors.
We are enthusiastic about joining forces with SCORE, says USASBE Executive Director Joan Gillman. SCORE is Americas foremost resource for business counseling, and their experience will be a tremendous asset to USASBE.
SCORE is pleased to form a national partnership with USASBE, says SCORE CEO Kenneth Yancey. This alliance will make the latest in business research available to SCORE chapters, and bring the real-world expertise and advice of SCORE counselors to classrooms across America.
USASBE is a network for entrepreneurship educators, researchers, professional practitioners and government policy makers. Established in 1982, USASBE offers a broad spectrum of programs for entrepreneurship education and encourages research that has practical application. Its mission is to advance knowledge and foster business development through entrepreneurship education and research.
The SCORE Association was formed in 1964 as a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. For information about starting or operating a small business, call 1-800/634-0245 for the SCORE chapter nearest you. More than 10,500 volunteer members provide individual counseling and business workshops for aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners. SCORE has assisted more than 4.5 million Americans with small business counseling. Visit SCORE on the Web (www.score.org). |

Integrating Theory and Practice:
USASBE Moves to Require the So What Issue in
All Conference Paper
and Workshop Presentations
As the Premier Entrepreneurship Education Association in the United States, one of USASBEs primary goals is to facilitate high impact research. Annually, USASBEs conference presents the leading scholars, researchers and teachers presenting cutting edge research and workshop information to advance Entrepreneurship and more specifically, Entrepreneurship Education in the U.S.
In keeping with the current call for more relevancy in entrepreneurial research and a greater linkage of research to the Real World, USABSE, at the encouragement of Mike Hennessy, President of The Coleman Foundation, has agreed that all paper submissions and workshop presentations integrate their concepts and research into practical applications for Entrepreneurship generally and more specifically Entrepreneurship Education. This year we have added the requirement of an Executive Summary in addition to the Abstract that is aimed at the academic audience. The Executive Summary is intended for business people and practitioners and is a summary of the findings that includes implications for practice and how the findings might be implemented.
Authors of papers and workshops must include a section prior to conclusion addressing the So what? issue of their research/concepts and workshop submitters must indicate how the So what? issue will be handled in their presentations. This should be included in the required Implications for Practice section before the Conclusion. Reviewers will be directed to look for these sections in both paper and workshop submissions. Papers and workshops must address the 'so what' question as it relates to the field to be considered.
Our goal is to advance the field. We need relevant, meaningful high quality and useful examination of issues that impact todays entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial educators. |
