Networking for Entrepreneurial Minded Students is Vital to Success
By Michael Luchies, Manager of Membership for the Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization
Think of the greatest entrepreneurial success stories of our time, almost all of them became successful not only because of their work, but because of people they met along the way. Do you think that Mark Zuckerberg’s “The Facebook” would be what it is today if he would have never met Sean Parker? Would Steve Wozniak (CEO Hall of Famer) have been as successful if he hadn’t made a connection with Steve Jobs? Probably not. These are only two of many examples of how networking is vital for success, whether it is meeting a partner, investor, mentor or future customer.
At the 2011 CEO National Conference, Sean O’Morrow, a culinary graduate and business student at the University of Michigan Flint, made the most out of a networking opportunity. After Tom Walter, the CEO of Illinois based catering company Tasty Catering, spoke at the conference, Sean decided to overcome his fears of approaching new people and introduced himself to Tom based on a mutual interest of one day becoming an entrepreneur in the food industry. Not only did Sean receive an hour long meeting over lunch with an experienced entrepreneur, but Sean was given the chance to have a week long, hands-on, intense work experience at the Tasty Catering headquarters to learn “the business,” all while making money like a real employee! Without introducing himself to Tom, Sean would have never had this terrific opportunity that will serve him well in the future.

| NEW DEGREE PROGRAM IN ARTS ENTREPRENEURSHIP | | April 5, 2012 | NEW DEGREE PROGRAM IN ARTS ENTREPRENEURSHIP
By Jim Undercofler
Lately I’ve been involved in a most interesting process of formulating a new degree program in arts entrepreneurship for Ithaca College. If all goes well this master’s level program will launch in fall, 2013.
What’s been most interesting has been the feedback I have received through an external commenter phase, a part of an IC-required market feasibility “test.”.
The master’s degree program will educate and prepare students to launch new ventures in either the for-profit or not-for-profit worlds. Additionally it will prepare them to enter existing organizations as innovators, able to fundamentally rethink entrenched models.
There were 3 areas of differences in reacting to and providing feedback on the design I proposed.
The first arose on how much financial and legal management education to require. One side argued that a general understanding of these matters was enough, as one can always hire this expertise (assuming one knows what the issues are!) and the other side argued that deep knowledge and acquired skills are essential.
The second difference arose around defending existing arts administration programs v. being critical of them – both in regard to entrepreneurship. One collective voice said that existing arts administration programs already focus on entrepreneurship and innovation, that there is no need for a new program with entrepreneurship at its core; the opposing voice stated that existing programs are stuck in the mud, only educating students for jobs that will soon be obsolete. This latter group welcomed the idea of a new degree program with entrepreneurship at its core.
And the third difference of opinion arose over whether students should continue their arts learning in the program. I have recommended 6 required credits in the arts. One side argued that this was essential, while the other saw it as unimportant.
Here’s how I’m thinking about each of these areas of difference. I feel that arts managers must have a deep artistic sensibility, both to assist in making final decisions, but also to maintain credibility within their organization or group. In the financial/legal domain, graduates will need to know and understand a host of financial and legal issues and skill areas. They will not necessarily be graduated able to take authoritative action on a number of them. For example, they will need to know what a Form 990 is and what is required by it. They must be able to read it and discern it, but not be able to file it. They will need to know about a number of compliance issues, know what these compliance issues require, but not be able to take action on all of them (depending on complexity). The balance described here is defensible (in my opinion) because graduates’ energies must be directed toward the core operations of their venture, and knowing what financial and legal issues must be addressed, they can purchase services to manage them. Long-term budgeting and projections, preparation of balance sheets and other more routine financial matters: yes, these must be mastered, but not the more complex and gnarly ones.
I have to agree with those who believe that most arts administration programs are stuck in a mode of preparing students for existing positions in organizations that are rapidly changing or fading. Some of these programs do offer electives or embedded units on entrepreneurship, but I have not found one that has it at its core. Needless to say, I believe the preparation of a new type of arts leader, one who is well versed in entrepreneurial thinking and skills is paramount to creating a new future for the arts in the US.
Jim Undercofler is currently Professor of Arts Administration at Drexel University. He is the former President and CEO of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Dean of the Eastman School of Music, Executive Director and Founder of the Perpich Center for Arts Education, and Director of the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, Connecticut.. | KEYNOTE SPEAKER PRAISES USASBE AFTER 2012 CONFERENCE IN NEW ORLEANS | | April 5, 2012 | KEYNOTE SPEAKER
PRAISES USASBE
AFTER 2012 CONFERENCE IN
NEW ORLEANS
“USASBE ensures the future of our country…”
Barry Moltz
I had been following the wonderful work of USASBE for over a decade. When entrepreneurship first started to
be taught at colleges, I was skeptical about how effective it would actually be. How were they going to teach someone to be an entrepreneur? Force students to stay up all night and spend all their money (and their family and friends)? I felt that it was something that had to be experienced and not just taught in the classroom.
This past January, I learned first hand how wrong I had been. I was invited to keynote at the USASBE annual conference in New Orleans. I was impressed by the experience and the extensive curriculum at various institutions. What I learned that will help students success as entrepreneurs:
- Most academic faculty have experience actually being entrepreneurs. They know what it is like from personal experience to have their own business. This undoubtedly comes through in their own teaching.
- Case studies. The students are taught through case studies that simulate the decisions that small business owners need to make. In this way, failing has no penalties.
- Learning to work in a team. With these case studies, they learn the critical skill of teamwork and how to handle the conflicts that invariably happen among people.
- Students start their business now. Not just theory, students are encouraged to start their own business on campus. Many are even seeded by funds available through college programs. In this way, they can make all the mistakes before the stakes are much higher.
The future of this country is our students and small business owners. USASBE are training both for success.

| SIG UPDATE: Social Entrepreneurship SIG | | April 4, 2012 | Social Entrepreneurship SIG
by Tony Mendes, University of Texas-Austin
Interest in Social Entrepreneurship by USASBE members continues to grow. The 2012 conference in New Orleans provided the opportunity for USASBE members to gain valuable skills and insights to the development of social entrepreneurship programs across a wide range of colleges and universities.
Two pre-conference workshops were offered, partnerships with the LAW SIG and the Social Entrepreneurship SIG. A half day workshop on “Social Entrepreneurship in Education” provided participants with resources for building a single course, or an entire curriculum in social entrepreneurship. Best practices in curriculum development and community based initiatives were presented by panelists who shared resources and experiences.
The first panel, including; Robert D’Intino, PhD, Rowan University, Mark Pomerantz, Seattle University and Melissa Paulsen, University of Notre Dame, discussed the differences and similarities in social entrepreneurship curriculum across disciplines. The panel also shared insights and lessons learned through Business Plans developed by students and in partnership with community organizations.
A second panel, included; Stephanie Barksdale, Tulane University, Jeffrey Robinson, PhD, Rutgers University and Melissa Paulsen. The panelists discussed ways in which their universities are integrating outreach, experiential learning, and/or practitioners into their programs and classrooms. The programs they offer at their respective universities represent best practices in community engagement and state of the art strategies for building and sustaining social enterprise.
A second half day workshop was offered by members of the Law SIG. This workshop, “Legal Issues in Social Entrepreneurship”, covered a wide range of topics (see article on Law SIG below.)
The Social Entrepreneurship SIG and the LAW SIG are currently developing the structure and content elements for offering a “Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship”. Details on the offerings and requirements for completing the certificate will be announced later this spring semester.

| 2012 ANNUAL CONFERENCE | | April 4, 2012 | USASBE in the Big Easy:
New Orleans 2012
By Jessica Hudson, Kent State U.
In my role as a Corporate and Foundation Relations Officer, I align sources of support with faculty research and institutional priorities. One area of concentration is entrepreneurship, So, I became a member of USASBE, and packed my bags for a conference in one of the greatest cities on earth, New Orleans, Louisiana, a place where entrepreneurship and innovation have come to the forefront!
The pace in New Orleans is a contradiction – vibrant and soothing, all in the same beat. People are less uptight, and they have one thing on their minds: a good time. To some, this is a leisurely stroll through the intoxicating French Quarter, with its plentiful shops, eateries, and storytelling locals that beckon visitors to settle in and embrace the haunting charm. Or perhaps it’s an afternoon spent at Jackson Square, admiring the grand St. Louis Cathedral, and indulging in chicory-infused coffee and beignets. Others wait patiently for Bourbon Street’s nightly awakening, to bask in open container bliss and contemplate temptations that run as long and deep as the Mississippi River. The sounds of smooth jazz and raw blues permeate the city, in clubs and on corners, slowly making their way to the cobblestone streets. Clearly, the city lives up to it’s nickname, “The Big Easy”, but New Orleans also knows how to take care of business. Catastrophic hurricanes, devastating oil spills, and the lingering effects of an economic recession can’t keep this city down. In fact, these misfortunes created an atmosphere of necessity that fostered a resurgence of entrepreneurship, making New Orleans the perfect setting for USASBE 2012.
The conference provided attendees with a variety of program choices, networking events, roundtables and plenary sessions. One of the most valuable sessions I attended was presented by Jennifer Keller Jackson, grants manager for the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA), a consortium of nearly 200 colleges and universities across the United States. Jennifer provided an overview of the NCIIA, along with some examples of student projects the organization funded:
- Solar panels designed to look like ivy, on display at MOMA in NYC;
- Retail packaging material made from mushrooms;
- A neutral composite material to line automobile trunks;
- Affordable respirators for the developing world; and
- Smart phone technology to identify and track counterfeit drugs.
Other highlights included hearing Robbie Vitrano speak about reinventing pizza in a saturated market, learning about the responsibilities and accomplishments of the USASBE Fellows, and experiencing the energy and excitement of the USASBE 2012 Awards at The Foundry, an amazing venue in the heart of New Orleans.
I set out for USASBE 2012 with several goals in mind: to learn more about the intersection of academia and entrepreneurship; to network with as many people as possible; and to identify trends in the field. As a first-time attendee, I was impressed with the ample opportunities I had to accomplish all of the above.
I can hardly wait to spread the word about USASBE 2013 to my colleagues.

| The 23rd Gateway Entrepreneurship Research Conference | | March 6, 2012 | The 23rd Gateway Entrepreneurship Research Conference
April 20-22, 2012
Saint Louis University
St. Louis, MO
Primary sponsorship comes from the Kauffman Foundation with scholarship support from the Coleman Foundation and additional support from the Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network.
Since its start in 1987, Saint Louis University’s Gateway Series for Entrepreneurship Research has promoted advances in scholarship on entrepreneurship and related disciplines. At the Gateway conference, a general foundation is laid by the keynote speaker. The keynote address starts the meeting and provides a common frame of reference and point of departure. Then work will take place in small to medium sized groups exploring research and techniques applicable to the theme. The goal is to create an environment that maximizes opportunity for informal group discussion and provides connections and research opportunities for the participants. Other than the keynote speaker, no other Gateway participant needs to submit a paper to attend the conference.
The topic for the 2012 conference is: Technology Commercialization: Have we learned anything? Keynote address will be given by Kathleen Allen, of the USC Marshall School of Business.
Economic growth happens when innovation meets entrepreneurship. With the passage of the Bayh-Dole Act in 1980, universities were permitted to commercialize their federally funded research. But it wasn’t until the mid-1990′s that universities began in earnest to develop programs to facilitate commercialization and technology entrepreneurship. Despite this effort, today we still have not figured out how to best move more of our research into the market to benefit society. In fact, the private sector struggles with many of the same issues as universities do. What have we learned? What is the role of education in facilitating technology entrepreneurship, commercialization, and economic development? Where are the gaps in research and where should we focus our efforts now? The entrepreneurship teaching and research communities have vital roles to play in the economic growth of any region and every country. We will identify what those roles are and how we can accelerate more effective technology commercialization going forward.
Kathleen Allen, PhD, is a professor of entrepreneurship at the USC Marshall School of Business and founding director of the Marshall Center for Technology Commercialization. Allen works with scientists and engineers to identify markets and applications for their technologies, develop commercialization teams, and prepare them to seek funding. She is on the advisory boards of the USC Center for Scientific Translation, the USC Regulatory Science Program, and the USC-CHLA Center for Technology and Innovation in Pediatrics. She is the author of more than 15 books in the field of entrepreneurship and technology commercialization including the leading texts Launching New Ventures, 6th Ed. and Entrepreneurship for Scientists and Engineers. Her personal entrepreneurial endeavors include two successful companies in commercial real estate brokerage, development, and investment, and two technology-based businesses. She is president and co-founder of N2TEC Institute, a nonprofit organization that was inspired by work she conducted under an NSF grant to develop a model for a technology commercialization ecosystem. The institute focuses on driving the launch of new technology ventures, particularly in life sciences and medical devices in rural and underserved regions of the U.S. Allen serves as an advisor to two life sciences companies, is entrepreneur-in-residence at a major aerospace company, and is director of a NYSE company.
For doctoral students and faculty facing travel hardships, there are scholarships available from the Coleman Foundation. Those who need a formal role in order to receive institutional support can serve as facilitators or correspondents. If either of these apply to you, please contact us as soon as possible to make arrangements.
If you have questions about the registration process or Coleman scholarship, please contact Jeanne Rhodes:rhodesja@slu.edu or 314-977-3850. If you have questions regarding conference content, please contact Conference Organizers Jintong Tang (jtang3@slu.edu), Sridhar Condoor (condoor@slu.edu) or Jerome Katz (katzja@slu.edu).

| Journal of Small Business Management- Call for Paper: Measuring the Impact of Entrepreneurship Education | | February 21, 2012 | Call for Papers:
Measuring the Impact of Entrepreneurship Education
Journal of Small Business Management (JSBM)
2013 Special Issue (Issue 51, Volume 1)
Guest Editors:
George Vozikis, California State University, Fresno
George Solomon, George Washington University
Doan Winkel, Illinois State University (dwinkel@ilstu.edu)
Background and objectives of the special issue
Those institutions and individuals creating and delivering entrepreneurship education seek to
provide various students (undergraduate, graduate, business, non-business, etc.) with skills,
strategies, knowledge, and motivation to improve their chances of entrepreneurial success
(Ronstadt, 1985). This success could manifest in, for instance, founding a sustainable business,
or transforming an existing small business or corporation in innovative ways. Preliminary
evidence suggests that entrepreneurship education is indeed related to becoming an entrepreneur
and to entrepreneurial success (Dickson, Solomon, & Weaver, 2008). However, given the rapid
pace of adoption of entrepreneurship education in higher education institutions across the globe,
and the technological, regulatory, economic and other contextual revolutions occurring in
today’s world, today’s entrepreneurship educator can be easily overwhelmed with the task of
preparing their students for an entrepreneurial career.
The purpose of the special issue is to describe, analyze, and improve our understanding of
effective practices in engaging students in the entrepreneurship classroom. We seek conceptual
and empirical (both qualitative and quantitative) contributions that consider the learning and
educational implications of entrepreneurship for business and non-business educators, for-profit
and non-profit businesses, and community organizations. More specifically, this special issue
aims to address challenges and emerging solutions in the entrepreneurial classroom and beyond.
In this vein, we encourage submissions that address entrepreneurship education in academic or
non-academic settings. Contributions stemming from the Entrepreneurship Education Project
(www.entrepeduc.org/) dataset or that address any of the following are especially encouraged:
- Use diverse theoretical and empirical perspectives to explore the diverse means of delivering engaging learning experiences to entrepreneurship students
- Develop measures of success in entrepreneurship education
- Present proven strategies and best practices for engaging students in the entrepreneurship classroom and for bridging the gap between educational experience and implementation of entrepreneurial behavior
- Illustrate institutional factors that foster a productive entrepreneurship learning environment
- Present new ideas for designing, implementing, and evaluating entrepreneurship education
Some research questions and issues that contributions might address, among many others, are:
- How can educators create realistic, engaging entrepreneurial experiences for their students? What specific pedagogical techniques successfully motivate and develop entrepreneurs? How do these techniques differ by region, culture, country, or level of education?
- How does entrepreneurship education differ between business students and non-business students? (see previous (dated) Kauffman reposts like the New Mexico report found here: http://www.unm.edu/~asalazar/Kauffman/Entrep_research/e_ed_grow.pdf
- How can higher education institutions inject a culture of entrepreneurship into their fabric of learning?
- What topics in entrepreneurship are most important to address in business or non- business curricula? What differences are there regionally, culturally, or between levels of education (i.e., undergraduate vs. graduate)?
Deadlines and important dates for the Special Issue
Stage Date
Deadline for submission of manuscript June 1, 2012
First round of reviews completed July 22, 2012
Submission of revised manuscript September 1, 2012
Second round of reviews October 1, 2012
Expected delivery to JSBM December 15, 2012
Submission
Please submit your manuscript to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jsbm and indicate in the
submission form that your paper is for the special issue on entrepreneurship education.

| WomenPreneurs- 21st Century Success Stories by Dorothy Perrin Moore | | February 8, 2012 | WomenPreneurs
21 st Century Success Stories
Dorothy Perrin Moore
To Be Published February 21st 2012 by RoutledgeThis one of a kind book provides valuable tools for faculty teaching management, entrepreneurship, and women’s studies and for directors of professional development workshops. The book is built on sound empirical and theoretical research accompanied by 21 cases. The five chapters cover career and life strategies across a broad spectrum.
WomenPreneurs . . .
Jerome Katz, Coleman Professor of Entrepreneurship, Saint Louis University, writes:
“Professor Moore brings together inspiring stories of a remarkable variety of successful women. But more than just motivating stories, she connects them to the latest research from entrepreneurship, leadership, human resources, and career theory to take you beyond the story to understand the deeper lessons and know how and why these inspiring women’s decisions and actions can be replicated in your own life. Some inspiring books give you a quick pick-me-up, WomenPreneurs gives you that and the lessons to permanently change your life for the better.”
Sharon Hadary, Founding and former Executive Director, Center for Women’s Business Research, USA, states
“Business women — both corporate and entrepreneurial — can make the 21st Century their time to thrive with this expertly researched book. It is your guide to understanding and overcoming work place challenges, and the insightful interviews with women business leaders will inspire and motivate you.”
Ethné Swartz, Chair, Marketing & Entrepreneurial Studies, Fairleigh Dickinson University, USA.
“This book takes us on journeys of individual careers that show how to do the right thing while also doing justice to careers and the individual quest for self actualization. Moore is the docent that shows the reader examples of women who have progressed careers while balancing family life, negotiating pressures in the workplace or with technology and using these elements as counterpoints to thriving and fulfilling lives. The women in these pages emerge as managers, leaders and mothers because of seeing things differently and making different choices. Their examples should provide comfort to those who wonder whether careers in business can be led ethically, sustainably and with integrity and pride.”
Ronald J. Burke, Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto, Canada notes:
“Dorothy Moore, an international authority on women’s entrepreneurship, has done it again. This book, like her earlier writing, puts the spotlight on a critical factor in a country’s economic success-women’s entrepreneurial activity. She first positions her work in the wider changing workplace and social context, moving then to a consideration of both leadership and management and work and family life. She concludes by examining differing paths to entrepreneurship among women and management challenges likely to be faced as their firms mature. Her extensive use of case examples enriches the content at every step. This book is a must read for academics interested in entrepreneurship and family business, professional women, and both budding and established women entrepreneurs.”
Mary C. Mattis, Chair, Institutional Review Board, Research & Policy Support Group, NYC Department of Education, Former Director of Information Center and Vice President of Research and Advisory Services, Catalyst, USA.
“The unique organization of WomenPreneurs will appeal to a wide range of readers. Moore’s panoramic update of changes driven by increased workforce diversity – especially the influx of women into business organizations – is coupled with compelling profiles of talented and committed women entrepreneurs who realized their vision of creating workspaces where employees could “make a difference, add value to our world and impact other people’s lives in positive ways.”
G. Dale Meyer, Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Founding Director, Deming Center for Entrepreneurship University of Colorado – Boulder, USA
“Dr. Dorothy Moore, an astute researcher and distinguished professor, has dedicated her professional life to supporting women who seek “bright and successful” careers. She has interviewed hundreds of women in her attempt to discover barriers, but also surmounting skills and strategies for women to defeat the obstructions to business and professional success. WomenPreneurs is a book, like no other, in which the reader, female or male, has the opportunity to meet women who have persisted in overcoming barriers to success. The stories of these high achievement women integrate realistically with Dr. Moore’s researched-useful insights.”

Monday – Tuesday, March 5-6, 2012
Reed Conference Center and Sheraton Hotel, Midwest City, Oklahoma
Who Should Attend
Health Management Professionals – academics, practitioners and business professionals who have an interest in transforming health through innovation and entrepreneurship.
Transforming Health through Innovation & Entrepreneurship
We invite you to the 1st annual International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Health (IEH). This conference is presented by the OSU School of Entrepreneurship and the OSU Center for Health Sciences and the Center for Executive and Professional Development in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University in cooperation with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Indiana University, San Diego State University, University of Pretoria, South Africa, and the University of South Florida, along with the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology, and the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs. The conference will be held in Oklahoma City on March 5-6, 2012, at the Reed Conference Center, Sheraton Midwest City Hotel.
This inaugural conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Health reflects a growing need to transform today’s’ dysfunctional health care systems into one in which creative and innovative solutions will lead to better health and health care delivery. We are living through what is arguably the most challenging time for the health care industry. Globally, health systems are characterized by rising costs, poor access and diminishing quality and safety of care, and there appears to be no imminent solution on the horizon. In the wake of this crisis in health, the world is looking for new sources of efficiency and alternative business models. Now, more than ever, we need health sector academics and practitioners to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship…..not just to survive, but to redefine and reshape health and health care delivery.
The IEH conference provides an open platform to bring together thought leaders, scholars and practitioners from across the globe to present research and to stimulate discussions on how innovation and entrepreneurship can help transform health.
We will meet in Oklahoma City, rated by the Kauffman Foundation as one of the most entrepreneurial cities in America, and home to a major hospital and health research community. Delegates fly into Will Rogers World Airport.

| The 23rd Gateway Entrepreneurship Research Conference | | February 3, 2012 |
The 23rd Gateway Entrepreneurship Research Conference
April 20-22, 2012
Saint Louis University
St. Louis, MO
Primary sponsorship comes from the Kauffman Foundation with scholarship support from the Coleman Foundation and additional support from the Kern Engineering Entrepreneurship Network.
She is the author of more than 15 books in the field of entrepreneurship and technology commercialization including the leading texts Launching New Ventures, 6th Ed. andEntrepreneurship for Scientists and Engineers.

Entrepreneurship is a contact sport. In this issue we look at various approaches to helping students learn through experience. The first looks at the growing trend of providing space on campus for student entrepreneurs to develop and grow their businesses. The second two articles this month highlight ways programs support student entrepreneurs that are not dependent on dedicated space. As entrepreneurship education continues to move outside the confines and constraints of the traditional classroom, we can expect to see more examples of schools that are becoming even more intentional in how they structure and plan co-curricular learning opportunities.
We welcome innovations and ideas in entrepreneurship education from your programs that you would like to share with your colleagues around the globe. Just send them along to me at jeff.cornwall@belmont.edu

PEDAGOGY
Patricia G. Greene, Heidi Neck; Babson College
“The Entrepreneurial Professor”
Entrepreneurship education has seen incremental change over the past 30 years. As educators we spend a disproportionate amount of time discussing the content of entrepreneurship courses versus the process and methods employed to teach entrepreneurship. What would happen if we treated our courses as new ventures or startups? How would our teaching change if we practice in our classrooms what we purport to teach in our classrooms? In this pillar session we introduce and explore the persona of the “Entrepreneurial Professor.” Significant change in entrepreneurship education begins with the entrepreneurial professor. Become a part of the change!
RESEARCH
G. Thomas Lumpkin; Syracuse University
“Long-Term Orientation and Entrepreneurship: Research Challenges and Opportunities”
Long-term orientation (LTO) is an important topic for management and entrepreneurship research because of the increasing emphasis businesses and policy makers are placing on social venturing and sustainability. Long-term thinking, for example, is often a key to effectively pursuing a triple bottom line. LTO has roots in stewardship theory, culture studies, decision theories and family business research. Definitions and insights about LTO from these literatures, however, are not always compatible. This Pillar session will introduce a framework for studying long-term orientation that includes three dimensions—futurity, continuity, and perseverance. It will also address why long-term orientation matters to entrepreneurship researchers and suggest future opportunities for LTO research.

Speakers: Noel Campbell, Kristie Briggs, David Mitchell
Panelists: Tammy Rogers, Gift Dafuleya, Tendayi Gondo, Prestin Lewis, Steve Gohmann, Lu Wie
Institutions, especially public policies, are a significant determinant of economic outcomes. Entrepreneurship is often the channel by which public policies affect economic outcomes. Furthermore, entrepreneurial activity affects the economic conditions that feed back into the policy making process. Moreover, the activities of political entrepreneurs influence public policy, or the underlying, “deeper” institutions of social mores, acceptable conduct, and expectations about economic and political life. The Journal of Entrepreneurship & Public Policy was created to encourage and disseminate quality research about these vital relationships. The ultimate aim is to improve the quality of the academic and social discourse about entrepreneurship and public policies. In general, JEPP seeks high-quality articles that say something interesting about the multilateral relationships among institutions, public policy, entrepreneurship, and economic development. JEPP invites everyone to join in the conversation.

| The Sustainability, Ethics and Entrepreneurship (SEE) Conference | | October 20, 2011 | Conference Announcement and Call for Papers
The Sustainability, Ethics and Entrepreneurship (SEE) Conference
Dates: Thursday-Friday, April 12-13, 2012
Location: University of Denver, Denver CO
Conference Website: http://biz.colostate.edu/seeConference
Keynote Speakers
Sankaran Venkataraman, MasterCard Professor of Business Administration; Research Director, The Batten Institute, Darden School of Business, University of Virginia
Jay Barney, Chase Chair for Excellence in Corporate Strategy and Professor of Management & Human Resources; Fisher College of Business, Ohio State University
Tom Dean, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Enterprise, Colorado State University
Jim O’Toole, Daniels Distinguished Chair of Business Ethics, University of Denver
Building on the vibrant cohort of scholars in ethics, entrepreneurship, and sustainability around the Rockies’ Front Range, the SEE Conference will enable local, national, and international researchers to drive the development of these increasingly important and rapidly changing areas of study. Sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship draw on knowledge from diverse, but converging streams of research. These include but are not limited to studies on sustainability, social entrepreneurship, business ethics, firm-community ties, and environment impacts, to name a few. The fact that ethics and sustainability are intertwined with the concept of entrepreneurship is no longer new. Indeed, many argue that ethical choices are a fundamental aspect of any business activity, and critical to sustained success of startups, small firms, medium enterprises, and large, multinational corporations. Some even suggest that the focus on sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship triangulates every economic opportunity. The goal of the conference is to advance the accumulation of knowledge about SEE-related topics.
We invite participants to submit abstracts (2-3 page) that address a broad array of subjects on the topics of sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship (SEE). These abstracts will be reviewed by our Advisory Board. Potential topics include, but are not limited to the following areas:
• Definitional and conceptual understandings of sustainable and ethical entrepreneurship
• Conceptual models and empirical analysis of the antecedents, consequences, and contingencies associated with the processes of sustainable and ethical entrepreneurship.
• The role of ethical behavior in the growth, survival, and performance of entrepreneurial ventures.
• Antecedents and consequences of unethical behavior in entrepreneurial ventures.
• The nature and dimensions of ethical behavior in the entrepreneurial firm.
• The role of economic and institutional systems in motivating ethical and sustainable behaviors.
• Divergences between economic incentive systems and entrepreneurial action.
• The interplay between ethics, sustainability, economic institutions, and entrepreneurial opportunity.
• Examination of productive and unproductive entrepreneurship.
• Value creation in sustainable and ethical entrepreneurship.
Participants of the SEE conference can expect to:
• Share cutting-edge research, ideas and theories.
• Foster collaborative research efforts.
• Build a worldwide network of scholars who advance the state of knowledge about SEE.

USASBE Joins the Second Annual Small Business Saturday to Drive Business to Small Business
Aims to Unite and Inspire Consumers to Shop Small on November 26, 2011
Nashville, Tennessee – October, 14, 2011 – USASBE, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, today announced its participation in the second annual Small Business Saturday on November 26, 2011. Small Business Saturday is a day for dedicating a portion of holiday shopping to local, independently-owned small businesses.
American Express, the founding sponsor of Small Business Saturday, created the national program in 2010 in response to small business owners’ most pressing need: more demand for their products and services. The second event will build on last year’s inaugural program that drove millions of dollars to main street merchants.
USASBE recognizes the importance of small businesses in the United States, the jobs they create and the culture they instill in local communities. Small businesses have generated 64 percent of net new jobs over the past 15 years and employ just over half of all private sector employees, according to the Small Business Administration.
“We are proud to have USASBE join the Small Business Saturday Coalition,” said Maryann Fitzmaurice, senior vice-president, American Express OPEN. “It is critical that we get as many supporters on board as possible to generate demand for small, independently owned businesses this holiday season and beyond.”
Joining the Annual Initiative
Social media will play a central role in helping raise awareness about the importance of supporting small business and recognizing Small Business Saturday. The Small Business Saturday Coalition will be driving consumers and business owners to facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday where they can participate in many ways, including:
- American Express is also giving $100 of free Facebook advertising1 to 10,000 business owners who sign up at facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday to help build online buzz and drive customers to their stores on Small Business Saturday. By simply entering a few pieces of information and clicking a button, these business owners can create a personalized, geo-targeted ad that will run on Facebook leading up to November 26.
- American Express is giving a $25 statement credit2 to 200,000 Cardmembers who register their Card and use it to shop on Small Business Saturday at any locally-owned, independent small business that accepts American Express.
- Small business owners can go to Facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday to download online promotional materials that will help them drive sales to their business on Small Business Saturday.
- Everyone can spread the word about the day and their favorite businesses by giving a shout-out to their favorite local shops and restaurants via Facebook and Twitter.

About Small Business Saturday
November 26th marks the second annual Small Business Saturday, a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. Small Business Saturday (SBS) was created in 2010 by American Express in response to small business owners’ most pressing need: creating more demand for their products and services. 1.5 million Facebook users, 130 public and private organizations, and 41 elected officials declared their support for SBS last year. 100,000 small businesses downloaded SBS marketing materials, 10,000 businesses signed up for free Facebook advertising that ran on SBS and 200,000 consumers registered their American Express cards to receive $25 statement credits when they shopped at a small business on SBS. In the first year, small retailers who accept the American Express Card saw a 28% increase in sales on SBS.
(1) To be eligible to receive $100 worth of Facebook ads, you must register your business at Facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday. Registration is limited to the first 10,000 merchants. Limit one offer per registrant.
(2) To be eligible for the statement credit, you must register your eligible American Express Card at Facebook.com/smallbusinessaaturday. You may only register one Card for this offer. Using your registered American Express Card, you must spend $25 or more at participating small business merchants on 11/26/2011 to receive the $25 statement credit. Eligible merchants include any independently owned small businesses that accept the American Express Card. Purchases made online, at large, national chains, at franchised business locations and at government agencies are not eligible. Prepaid, corporate cards and ExpressPay transactions are not eligible. If your Card is replaced during the promotional period, please call the customer service number on the back of your Card for assistance. Registration is limited to the first 200,000 enrollees. Limit one statement credit per Cardmember. Statement credits are generally issued within five business days after your qualifying purchase, but may take up to two billing cycles to post to your account. Additional terms apply; see registration website for details.

| Transforming Health through Innovation and Entrepreneurship | | September 16, 2011 |
Transforming Health through Innovation and Entrepreneurship
~Abstracts Now Being Accepted~
We would like to invite you to the 1st annual International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Health (IEH). Jointly sponsored by Oklahoma State University, Indiana University, Oklahoma University, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the conference will be held in Oklahoma City on March 5-6, 2012. Abstracts are due September, 30, 2011.
This inaugural conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Health reflects a growing need to transform todays’ dysfunctional health care systems into one in which creative and innovative solutions will lead to better health and health care delivery. We are living through what is, arguably, the most challenging time for the health care industry. Globally, health systems are characterized by rising costs, poor access and diminishing quality and safety of care and there appears to be no imminent solution on the horizon.
For more information or to send abstracts, call http://ieh.okstate.edu/ or contact Dr. Rubin Pillay at (405) 744-1818.

| Call for Papers – Special Issue of the Journal of Women’s Entrepreneurship and Education: “Educating Women Entrepreneurs: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives” | | March 29, 2011 | Call for Papers
Special Issue of the Journal of Women’s Entrepreneurship and Education:
“Educating Women Entrepreneurs: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives”
Submission Deadline: August 31, 2011
Guest Editors:
Doan Winkel, Illinois State University, United States Jeff Vanevenhoven, University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, United States Mark Geiger, Illinois State University, United States
Women entrepreneurs play a crucial role in the development of the world economy (Brush et al., 2006; de Bruin et al., 2006, 2007; European Commission, 2005). For instance, in the United States alone as of 2002, over 6 million privately-held women-owned enterprises generated nearly $940 billion in sales and employed over 7 million people (U.S. Census Bureau, 2006). However, women-owned businesses, in general, tend to underperform men-owned businesses on a number of important metrics (Robb & Coleman, 2009). These same trends are occurring around the globe, illustrating the need to both understand and work to lessen this differential.
Research indicates that due to issues such as lack of access to information and networks, gender discrimination and stereotypes, and difficulties in balancing work and family responsibilities, women entrepreneurs face greater challenges in starting and growing new ventures (e.g., Anna et al., 2000; Brush et al., 2006; Fielden & Davidson, 2005; Marlow, 1997; Rosa & Hamilton, 1994; Rouse, 2005).
Women entrepreneurs have begun to seize and harness opportunity, but as a group women can have much more effect on the global economy. In order for them to realize a greater contribution, it is imperative to stimulate, support and sustain women’s entrepreneurial dreams and efforts. Education provides one critical “tool” to accomplish this.
The Journal of Women’s Entrepreneurship and Education (JWE) is peer reviewed and dedicated to the scholarly study of the education and practice of women entrepreneurs. In this special issue we seek to promote and discuss critical topics relating to the education of women entrepreneurs around the world. The journal provides a focused academic platform for the encouragement and dissemination of interdisciplinary research on issues regarding all aspects of women’s entrepreneurship and the education of women entrepreneurs. Readership includes policy makers, researchers, students, teachers, and practitioners in women’s entrepreneurship and education.
In the special issue, we welcome empirical, conceptual, and policy-based papers in the following areas, or any other that relates to educating women entrepreneurs and/or the impact of education on women entrepreneurs:
.. Cross-cultural comparisons of education systems and programs supporting women entrepreneurs
.. How education can unleash and focus the creative energy of women
.. Challenges institutions face in educating women entrepreneurs
.. Case studies of innovative educational programs promoting women entrepreneurs
.. Gender stereotypes in entrepreneurship education and how women overcome them
.. Educational factors which influence the propensity or motivation of women to become entrepreneurs
.. The role of entrepreneurship education in combating poverty and unemployment among women
This special issue will contain between 6 and 8 articles. JWE is published twice a year and strives to publish original articles of the highest quality.
JWE is in GESIS, EBSCO and Ullbe University databases. GESIS database is the most important database of scientific journals for social sciences in Eastern Europe by Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences. EBSCO is the biggest American database of academic magazines for institutions and universities all over the world. Ullibe University database is the database which encompasses universities and scientific institutions from 187 countries.
Notes to Prospective Authors:
1) Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to all guest editors in a Word-compatible format in accordance with the Journal of Women’s Entrepreneurship and Education guidelines (http://www.ien.bg.ac.rs/IEN1/images/stories/Izdavastvo/Casopis%20JWE/jwe_author_guidelines.pdf.) Please indicate that the manuscript is for consideration in the “Educating Women Entrepreneurs” special issue when submitting your manuscript online.
2) Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.
3) All papers are refereed through a double-blind peer-review process.
4) Please send your submissions electronically to all guest editors.
